Service Charges

Service Charges let you apply fixed additional costs to orders, such as environmental fees, platform surcharges, or packaging costs. These charges are shown clearly to customers and included in the order total during checkout.

Use them to recover operational costs or comply with local requirements (e.g. carrier bag charges in the UK).

Common Use Cases

  • Carrier Bag Charge – A small fixed fee for packaging
  • Platform Fee – A service charge applied to each order
  • Sustainability Fee – Offset compostable containers or delivery emissions

These are fixed-value amounts (not percentages) and can include tax.

How to Create a Service Charge

  1. Go to Settings > Service Charges
  2. Click Create

Fill in the following fields:

  • Name – What the customer will see (e.g. “Platform Fee” or “Bag Charge”)
  • Type – Choose from predefined charge types (optional; may vary by setup)
  • Description – Optional internal notes
  • Amount – Enter the fixed charge (e.g. 0.20 for 20p)
  • Tax Group – Select the correct tax rate, if applicable
  • Charge Active – Toggle ON to apply this charge to new orders

Rules

You can define when the charge should apply:

  • Customer Type
    • All Customers
    • Logged-in Only
    • Guest Customers Only
  • Order Type
    • All Orders
    • Collection Only
    • Delivery Only

This allows for precise targeting—for example, applying a packaging fee only to delivery guests, or a platform fee for all online orders.

Customer Experience

Customers will see service charges:

  • In the cart before checkout
  • On the order summary during checkout
  • In the final order confirmation (at the bottom of the itemised total)

The name and value of the charge are displayed clearly, helping maintain transparency and trust.

Good to Know

  • Charges are applied per order, not per item
  • You can have multiple service charges active at once
  • You can edit or deactivate charges at any time
  • Tax-inclusive charges are calculated based on your Tax Group selection
